France’s Macron Secures Saudi Pledge to Re-Engage With Lebanon

DUBAI—French President Emmanuel Macron said Saudi Arabia’s crown prince had agreed to re-engage with Lebanon after Riyadh cut ties with its neighbor, in the first trip by a major Western leader to the kingdom since the 2018 killing of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Lebanon’s economic crisis deepened last month after Saudi Arabia banned the country’s imports and expelled its ambassador, citing frustration over the role that Hezbollah, an ally of Saudi rival Iran, plays in Lebanese politics. Lebanese Information Minister George Kordahi—whose remarks about the Saudi-led war in Yemen sparked that row—resigned ahead of Mr. Macron’s trip, saying he hoped doing so would resolve the crisis.
